How to stay active while socially distancing

If you’re like me, you’re a bit skeptical about going to the gym even if they are claiming to be exercising the most upscale cleaning requisites. I’d still much rather exercise outdoors and at home. These are the 4 ways I’ve been able to stay active while social distancing but also kept it fun! It’s important to vary your exercises so your body gets worked out in different ways, using different muscles, and keeps your mind energized!

Tennis

Tennis is a naturally socially-distant sport so it is a great way to stay in shape as well as get some socializing done. Don’t know how to play tennis? Neither did I! This quarantine got me experimenting with new activities and exercises and I’ve been slowly learning how to play with a friend of mine. There is a great app called Tennis Director that allows you to reserve courts all over Miami so you’ll have the comfort of knowing you’ve got a court and there won’t be anyone around.

Riding Bike

Not only a great exercise but a fun way to explore the city and your surroundings. There is nothing like being able to really take in your exterior and see what businesses are popping up, what artwork has been done in the neighborhood, and fliers for upcoming events. This is one of the ways I stay informed and updated on my community. I have different bike trails which i’ll vary from one day to the other. Studies have even been done that conclude that a city with more bike lanes have happier people because biking is such a liberating and enthralling sport. There is nothing like the complete control a bike gives you through mind and body.

Rollerblading

There is nothing more Miami than rollerblading! This killer exercise is a full-body workout that will get your blood pumping! If you’re looking for something to tone your legs and make you focus on posture then this is it. To me, there is nothing like skating. There are several places to skate in Miami including Miami Beach, Virginia Key, Shark Valley, and Krome Ave!

Running

Good old-fashioned running is the bulk of how I’ve been able to stay in shape so you shouldn’t overlook this great exercise. In Miami, we’ve got some beautiful trails we can hit up including Bear Cut Nature Trail and the Underline.

At-Home Workouts

I would be remiss if I didn’t include home workouts. My absolute favorite app to use is Down Dog and their other app HIIT. Down Dog is for yoga and you are presented with a menu and some options. You select what type of yoga you want (Full practice, Hatha, Gentle, Restorative, Quick Flow, etc…), the time limit, your level, and other options to customize your practice, you click Start and it creates a sequence for you!! So great and uncomplicated! I seriously can’t recommend this app enough and they have a line of different apps for different workouts such as HIIT, Pilates, Barre, Prenatal Yoga, and 7-minute workout. You get unlimited access to all their apps for only $60 a year!! I am not being paid by this company I just truly believe their apps are amazing and I want everyone to know!

Walking

This is THE most underrated exercise. I’ve said it a million times and I will say it a million more!! You don’t know how many days I feel so unmotivated to work out so I will replace my usual routine with a nice long walk. During a walk I will focus on my stance and posture and it is a great way to actively strengthen those muscles. Posture is something I am also crazy about so walks are my time to shine and actively work on my posture. If you don’t want to do any crazy exercises just go for a walk. seriously.

Keeping your body active keeps your mind active and healthy. Nothing will get you in a slump faster than not maintaining an exercise routine. Life gets busy but the last thing you should ever sacrifice is your health. It is not a want it is a need. Your body demands it and self-love means giving your body the love it NEEDS even when your brain wants Netflix.
